Why won't your HEIC photos open everywhere?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have shot by default since iOS 11. It uses modern HEVC compression, so the same photo often takes half the space of a JPG at equal or better quality. The trade-off is compatibility: HEIC is an Apple ecosystem format, and a huge amount of software simply does not know how to read it. On Windows, the stock Photos app shows a broken image unless you have installed the HEIF extension from the Microsoft Store; on older Android phones and budget tablets, gallery apps refuse the file; on websites, upload forms, content-management systems, email clients, and many older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and Office all throw an "unsupported file" error.

This tool removes that friction in two seconds. You drag your .heic or .heif files onto the page, choose JPG, PNG or WebP as the output, and your own browser decodes the photos locally using an in-browser version of libheif (compiled to WebAssembly). Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no size cap, and no risk of your personal photos sitting on someone else's server. JPG is the safest choice for sharing, printing, email and almost every website; PNG preserves crisp edges and transparency for graphics; WebP gives you the smallest size when the destination is a modern website.

The quality slider controls how strongly the result is re-compressed: 0.9 is the sweet spot that looks identical to the original while staying small, and you can drop it toward 0.5 when every kilobyte counts. Files are converted one after another with a live progress bar, each result keeps its original name, and "Download all (ZIP)" bundles a whole photo shoot into a single archive. Because all decoding happens on your device, you can even disconnect from the internet and it still works.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't Windows open my iPhone HEIC photos?

Windows does not ship with a built-in HEIC decoder. You can install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but that is a system change and it still does not help with upload forms, old software or other people's computers. Converting the photos to JPG on this page first is the universal fix — JPG opens on every device, website and operating system ever made.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A re-encode is unavoidable, but at quality 0.9 the difference is invisible for photos shared online, emailed or printed. HEIC was already compressed, and JPG at 0.9 keeps essentially the same visual result. If you need pixel-perfect editing later, choose PNG or WebP lossless instead — they decode the HEIC without extra lossy compression.

Do I need to install anything on Windows or Android?

No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser as WebAssembly, so the same page works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone with nothing to install. The first conversion downloads the small decoding engine once; after that it is cached and instant. Just open the page, drop the files, and convert.

Can I convert a whole batch of iPhone photos at once?

Yes. Select or drag as many .heic/.heif files as you like — an entire album roll, for example — and they are processed as a queue with a progress bar. Each result downloads individually, or use "Download all (ZIP)" to get the whole batch in one archive, with original file names preserved.

Are my private photos uploaded to a server?

Never. Decoding and encoding happen entirely on your device. There is no upload endpoint, no account, and no server-side conversion — you can turn off your network connection mid-process and it keeps working. That matters for personal photos, documents and anything sensitive you would rather not send to a cloud converter.
